APPLICATION FOR A FOREIGNER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (NIE)
What is the Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)?
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the personal number that identifies foreigners and must appear on all documents that are issued or processed, as well as the records that are stamped on your identity card or passport.
This number will appear on all documents issued or completed by foreign people.
What do I have to do to obtain the Foreigners Identity Number (NIE)?
If you are a foreigner and you have a connection to Spain for economic, professional or social reasons, for identification purposes you will be given a personal, unique and exclusive, sequential number.
To obtain the NIE you must submit an APPLICATION.
For the NIE allocation application you must:
• Submit the standardized application form (EX-15), duly completed and signed.
• Present the original and a copy of a full passport, identity document or valid travel document or registration certificate.
• Submit a letter or communication detailing the economic, professional or social reasons that justify your request.
• When made through a representative, the representative will have to prove that they have sufficient power, expressly stating that they are empowered to present such a request.
For the assignment of an NIE for economic, professional or social reasons, the following applications will be accepted:
• Those presented in Spain personally by the interested party.
• Those presented in Spain through a representative.
• Those presented at the Spanish Diplomatic Representations or Consular Offices located in the applicant's country of residence, relating to their place of residence.

What requirements do I have to meet in order to obtain the NIE?
Not be in an irregular situation in Spain.
Not be prohibited from entering Spain or be listed as being objectionable.
Not to be within the period for which they have committed not to return to Spain.
In compliance with the schooling requirements for dependent minors of compulsory schooling age.
With reference to criminal records, the type or seriousness of any crime will be assessed to see if the person presents a danger to public order.
How do you obtain an NIE for the first time?
Firstly, you will have to request a prior appointment, go on the agreed day and submit the required documents.

Then, you must pay the appropriate fee at any bank together with form 790. Finally, you have to go to the Police office with the payment receipt in order to receive your NIE.
How do you obtain an NIE in the province of Girona?
The first thing to do is to make an appointment at the nearest Spanish National Police office. In Girona, this can be found at Carrer de Sant Agustí, 23, 17003 Girona. This is so that you can get the NIE as quickly as possible.
